TWENTY-FOUR

CHARLIE

Charlie groaned into her hands, and Vi put an arm around her shoulders.

Harper stood on Charlie’s other side. Elliot was spending the night with another little boy he’d made friends with in one of the art classes, giving his mom a night off. She’d been so excited for a girls’ night out, and Charlie didn’t want to ruin that.

“Ladies, what can I get—” Wyatt stopped talking as Charlie lowered her hands. “Shit.”

The long bar was L-shaped, and the three women sat at the end perpendicular to where Aiden stood with his beautiful date.

With a perfect view of them flirting.

Wyatt glanced over his shoulder at him then shook his head. “Sorry, Charlie.”

“It’s fine. Why would I care if he’s here with some model-looking woman.” She tried to shrug it off like it was nothing, but she knew her friends saw right through it. Especially Wyatt, who she’d shared more with in the last week than anyone. He knew everything that was going on between her and Aiden.

“She’s not that pretty,” Vi said.

“Right. And I’m the Queen of England,” Charlie deadpanned. The woman was gorgeous.

Wyatt handed his sister a drink without her having to ask. “If it makes a difference, they didn’t come here together.”

“See,” Harper said, “she just approached him. Nothing to worry about.”

But Wyatt’s wince told her otherwise.

“He approached her, didn’t he?” Charlie crossed her arms as he nodded. She knew tonight was important for Harper, but she honestly just wanted to leave.

As if reading her mind, Harper said, “We can go if you want.”

Charlie hesitated but then sighed. “No. It’s fine. This is your one night to come out. I… I’ll just ignore him.”

Except, Aiden wouldn’t stop glancing her way. Her throat tightened, clogging with emotions. Vi asked for a beer, and Wyatt grabbed one for her. He asked what Charlie wanted, and she ordered shots for all three of them.

The crowd slowly grew as time passed. When she finally couldn’t take it anymore, she took a second shot and stood from her stool.

“What are you doing?” Vi asked.

“You were right. Congratulations. I let it happen again.”

Her cousin didn’t look triumphant though, instead frowning.

Before she could speak, Charlie shook her head. She pointed across the bar to a few men who looked about their age. “Which is why I’m going to go pick one of them up.”

“Charlie—” Harper started, but Charlie held up a hand.

“I need to forget about these stupid Barnes brothers for a night and just have fun.”

She turned on her heel and stalked away. With her chin held high, she walked right past Aiden and his handsy date. He tried to get her attention, but she ignored him and headed straight for the group of men. The four of them stopped talking as she approached. A few watched her with curiosity, but the one she’d locked eyes on grinned.

He knew what she wanted.

“Dance with me?” she asked without preamble.

The man looked her up and down, taking in the tight red dress Vi had coerced her into wearing.
